Class price is $100 + materials.
Metal clay allows artists to make beautiful components that truly personalize their jewelry. It is a fabulous material that works like ceramic clay but actually is formed of metal. Available from various sources in gold, silver, bronze, copper, and steel versions, all metal clays are composed of tiny microns of metal, water and an organic binder. Pieces made from metal clay must be either kiln or torch-fired at high temperatures to sinter (“cure”) the material.
In this workshop, we will explore a number of techniques for working with Art Clay Silver as we make a variety of small charms that can be attached to a bracelet or used as pendants for necklaces. Techniques learned will include shaping, texturing, decorating (syringe and appliqué), stone-setting, sanding, firing and finishing. After the organic binder burns off during firing, the pieces are composed solely of pure silver.
Metal clay does not require a huge investment in tools and can easily be worked in a very small space. Small pieces can be fired with a crème-brulee type torch at home. Many stores and artists will fire larger pieces in their own kilns for a small fee.
In addition to the class price a kit may need to be purchased. This kit includes the following materials 20g Art Clay Silver, 10g Art Clay Silver paste, 1 3-tip Art Clay Silver syringe-type.
Jonna will have tool kits to lend to each student, along with a wide variety of textures, cutters, etc. for class use.
